[ Personality ] :
As a child, Gohan was shy and sweet. Ultimately, he still is, but 13 years of living in a slowly dying world has hardened his demeanor. He initially comes off as stern and quiet; even his horror at a newly-destroyed city has become mostly controlled. He's more blunt than he used to be. He’s still affected, but it’s mostly dulled. He has to deliberately bring it into focus if he’s going to get worked up.

A lot of the harsher aspects of his personality seem to come from Piccolo, his first martial arts master and best friend. Piccolo died when the androids attacked, and with him, the Dragon Balls and any chances of resurrection. While Gohan's taken his father as his inspiration to do his best and win against his enemies, Piccolo seems to be his model for survival.

He’s brighter when he’s around friends. He’s affable and understanding when he needs to be, compassionate, and knows when to be harsh and when not to be. At heart, he's a pacifist. He hates fighting, but he hates the idea of letting people down even more. There is the idea of avenging his friends, but his primary inspiration at this point is the good of the world.

Years of being outclassed in life-threatening, high-stakes battles have left Gohan with a very rough fighting style. He’s merciless, with big blasts, and not afraid of using already damaged property to his advantage. He tends to fight with a metaphorical sledgehammer. He hits hard, he hits quickly, and he doesn’t let up. His natural pacifism balks at this, but he’s learned pragmatism.

Gohan is a fairly private person, rarely sharing what he’s thinking in any meaningful way. He’ll state facts or answer questions, but he keeps his cards fairly close to his chest. He's used to being on his own; at age four, he survived six months alone in the wilderness as part of his training. Because of this, he knows how to provide for himself off the land, and has also developed a habit of talking to himself/thinking out loud when he doesn't think anyone else is around.

He’s also intuitive. He’s not the best tactician in a fight (his heart just isn’t in it), but he knows two plus two is four, and he knows how get to four. This is probably a measure of his natural intelligence—all of that studying would not have been beneficial to a child of below-average intelligence. It simply would not have been absorbed.

Similarly, if Gohan hadn’t liked, on one level, to study, again, he would never have learned. He is curious. He wanted to be a scholar as a child, and part of him is disappointed that his life turned out differently. The other part is focused on his responsibility: he’s the only hero Earth has until Trunks is ready.

He’s secretly still a bit of a nerd. Even in the middle of his survival training, when he was bored, he’d sit around scratching algebra equations in the dirt.

Most significantly—Gohan is very compassionate. He will consistently drop whatever he is doing to come to someone else’s aid. No matter what the risk to his own person, he can’t ignore the idea of someone in need.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths

Intelligence; he’s very book smart after lots of intensive studying in his childhood. He’s lost a lot of the finer mechanics (he can’t solve complex calculus equations anymore) but he can probably find the height of a building if you give him the length of the shadow and the position of the sun.

He’s a Saiyan, and a particularly strong one at that. He had the same power level at 5 that Prince Vegeta had circa age 30. His body is that much more durable than a normal human’s, due to Saiyans evolving to live on a planet with much higher gravity than Earth’s.

Strong moral code. He’s very noble and heroic, he cannot stand by and watch injustice happen. Has to try and stop it.

He’s objective, he knows when to be the stern teacher and when to be Trunks’s positive male role model.

Weaknesses

Confidence. Or the lack thereof. While he presents a strong front of self-assuredness, he just isn’t capable of believing in his own power. He tends to compare himself to his father, or else assume/believe Trunks will surpass him.

Guile. Boy can’t lie. If he tries, he stutters. He can keep his mouth shut like a champ, but he can’t actually fabricate a convincing story or deliver it with a straight face. The most he can do is omit the details. Like how Vegeta murdered an entire village just for a shiny yellow marble the size of a basketball.

Compassion and self-sacrifice. Gohan is noble to a fault, and has very little concern for himself. His priority is to save others, and if this means denying himself any kind of comfort, relief, or, indeed, life, he’ll do so without a second thought.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Dude is missing his left arm. He lost it in a fight with the androids (much like his life!) and doesn’t really bother pinning the sleeve or anything. It’s quite noticeable, since his sleeves are nearly elbow-length. Has a scar across one eye.

He’s half-human, half-monkey-warrior-alien, and his physiology sort of splits the differences: he was born with Saiyan-specific traits, like a tail and the ability to get stronger after surviving near-death, but his complexion favors his human mother, and his hair grows and changes style; pure Saiyans are pretty much born with their hairstyle and it stays that way.

There is also the matter of Gohan’s ‘hidden power.’ Basically, he gets a huge power boost from his anger. But since Gohan is naturally friendly and mellow, about the only thing that can prompt the levels of anger necessary is seeing people, especially those he cares about, hurt. While he’s never gotten used to seeing these kinds of things, and they still prompt anger and heroics from him, it no longer seems to result in the veritable explosions of previously-unseen power that occurred when he was a child.
